Control of recollision wave packets for molecular orbital tomography using short laser pulses

چکیده
Abstract. The tomographic imaging of arbitrary molecular orbitals via high-order harmonic generation requires that electrons recollide from one direction only. Within a semi-classical model, we show that extremely short phase-stabilized laser pulses offer control over the momentum distribution of the returning electrons. By adjusting the carrier-envelope phase, recollisions can be forced to occur from mainly one side, while retaining a broad energy spectrum. The signatures of the semi-classical distributions are observed in harmonic spectra obtained by numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

Angular encoding in attosecond recollision
We describe a general concept of using the spatial information encoded in the time-dependent polarization of high harmonic radiation generated by orthogonally polarized two-color laser fields. The main properties of recolliding electron wave packets driven by such fields are reviewed. It is shown that in addition to the recollision energy the angle of recollision of such wave packets, which is ...
متن کاملAtomic wavefunctions probed through strong-field light--matter interaction
Strong-field light–matter interactions can encode the spatial properties of the electronic wavefunctions that contribute to the process1–4. In particular, the broadband harmonic spectra, measured for a series of molecular alignments, can be used to create a tomographic reconstruction of molecular orbitals5. Here, we present an extension of the tomography approach to systems that cannot be natur...
متن کاملDependence of Tunneling Ionization and Harmonic Generation on the Structure of Molecules by Short Intense Laser Pulses
We illustrate how the sub-10fs lasers and attosecond XUV pulses can be used to probe the structure of molecules. Experimental results of the alignment dependence of the ionization rates and the high-order harmonic generation yields are shown to reflect the structure of the highest occupied molecular orbital. We also show that the vibrational wave packet of simple molecules can be mapped accurat...
متن کاملControlled Vibrational Quenching of Nuclear Wave Packets in D
Ionization of neutral D2 molecules by a short and intense pump laser pulse may create a vibrational wave packet on the lowest (1sσ+ g ) adiabatic potential curve of the D 2 molecular ion. We investigate the possibility of manipulating the bound motion, dissociation, and vibrational– state composition of such nuclear wave packets with ultra–short (6 fs) intense (1× 1014 W/cm2) near infrared (800...
متن کاملField-Free Alignment and Strong Field Control of Molecular Rotors
Methods of controlling molecular rotations using linearly polarized femtosecond and picosecond pulses are considered and analyzed theoretically. These laser pulses, typically in the infrared, are highly non-resonant with respect to the electronic degrees of freedom of the molecules and have intensities of ∼ 10 to 10 W/cm. It is shown how these laser pulses can force small linear molecules to al...
